Cameron Maybin was a bit of a forgotten man during the 2012 season for the San Diego Padres, but the team was thrilled to see him find his way to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the offseason. That was the plan. That was the plan for months. And for the last two months of the year, Maybin took the Dodgers’ leadoff spot, from which he was expected to make his greatest impact. The results were mixed. After hitting.182/.235/.282 with three home runs in the first month of the season, Maybin hit.313/.349/.427 in June and.244/.301/.332 in July. In between, Maybin played just nine games, with the Dodgers winning only five of them. Yet the Dodgers have seen enough of Maybin’s offensive potential. He has left-handed power, and he may be a pretty decent addition to the lineup if he can provide stability at the top of the order. The struggles Maybin experienced last season were partly because he was recovering from offseason surgery. But the bad results of the last two months came in a part of the season that was actually fine for him. And the good results came in the part of the year in which he should have been showing off the best of his offensive game. He’s been a good hitter ever since he debuted in the majors last year. So this isn’t a case of Maybin not making the majors because he couldn’t handle the pressure. It’s a case of him not showing enough of what he was capable of at the time. Can he show that in the remainder of the season? Because if he can, then the Dodgers have a player who should be a key part of their lineup for years to come.
